What Is a Style Archetype? A Guide to Discovering Your Personal Style
Share
One of life's greatest questions... who I am? Will I ever know?
If you're asking that question broadly, who's to say. But for the context of our business, let's say you're asking that question as it relates to fashion. In which case, the answer is YES. You can absolutely know who you are and what your personal style is. The easiest way to get there is by figuring out what your "style archetype" is.
Let's Define A "Style Archetype"
We all know fashion and trends can be overwhelming. And everything online is becoming AI or bite-sized videos to capture your attention without truly tailored information. To be honest, we hate to see it! That's why we started using "style archetypes" to help people with their personal style.
A style archetype is a framework that helps you understand the core identity behind your style, making it easier to build outfits and a wardrobe that feels natural and authentic. A style archetype is comprised of three things (aka the trio): your body type, your color season, and your style essences. That's truly all the information you need to start cooking up your dream wardrobe!
What's Trio Behind Style Archetypes
A style archetype is built upon the following:
Your Body Type
The first element of your style archetype is your body type. Here at YSA, we use the Kibbe Body Type system. Please note, that our analyses are interpretations of Kibbe's system (there's no formal training to get certified to type via this system).
Kibbe is a styling method that categorizes bodies based on the balance of yin and yang attributes. Instead of focusing on weight or measurements, it looks at overall proportions, bone structure, and facial features to determine the silhouettes, fabrics, and details that harmonize best with your natural shape.
Your Color Season
The second element is your color season. Color analysis identifies the colors that naturally enhance your features, including your skin tone, hair, and eyes. We use the 12 season system, where each of the four seasons has three subtypes.
Your Style Essences
The third element is your style essences. We use an interpretation of Kitchener's system. In that system, there are seven style essences, and most individuals have three or four essences. Style essences describe the overall vibe, aesthetic, and energy you bring via your features and presence.
Why Style Archetypes Matter
Many people struggle with style because they shop without a clear direction. Before we created the archetype approach, I found myself getting drawn to trends that never ended up looking good, colors that I liked on the rack but not on myself, and what other people that I admired were wearing. Suddenly, I had a closet full of clothes and nothing that I truly liked. Knowing my style archetype changed that. I knew what I was looking for, why, and how to style it.
Understanding your style archetype helps you:
- Create a more cohesive wardrobe
- Shop with confidence and intention
- Express your personality through clothing
- Avoid impulse purchases that don’t fit your style
Rather than copying trends, a style archetype gives you a consistent visual identity that feels aligned with who you are and how you want to look.
Style Archetypes vs. Trends
Trends change every season, but your style archetype stays relatively consistent. Once you understand the foundation of your style, trends become optional tools rather than something you feel pressured to follow.
For example, a Romantic archetype might embrace soft fabrics and delicate details whether the current trend is cottagecore or minimalist. The trend may change, but the core style identity remains the same.
Discover Your Style Archetype
Narrowing in on someone's style archetype starts with analyzing their body type, color options, and overall vibe. We recommend looking at what consistently resonates with people, including outfits, textures, shapes, hair styles, jewelry, etc.
If you want to start figuring out your type, asking yourself questions like:
-
Do I prefer structured or relaxed clothing?
-
Am I drawn to soft, bold, playful, or minimal styles?
-
What outfits make me feel most confident?
With enough questions, patterns will start to emerge that reveal your core style identity.
