A Quick Win For Fashion: Knowing Your Body Type

You’ve probably heard about body types at some point in your life. For a while, the conversation centered around shapes: apple, pear, triangle, and so on. No matter which system you prefer (personally, we use Kibbe), the goal of body type analysis is the same. To help you understand which silhouettes and clothing styles are harmonious and flattering on your figure.

So, if you're tired of guessing what will work, a body type analysis is a quick win to streamline shopping, simplify your wardrobe, and feel more confident in your outfits.

What Is Body Type Analysis?

Body type analysis is the process of understanding your natural bone structure, facial features, and flesh patterns so you can choose clothing that works with your body, not against it. Unlike generic sizing charts, professional body typing is consistent regardless of size fluctuations and your type is your type for life. Knowing it helps you:

  • Identify your best silhouettes and clothing types
  • Avoid styles that work against your natural beauty
  • Build a wardrobe that fits, flatters, and reflects your personal style
  • Save time and money by shopping smarter

Body type analysis is not about fitting into a standard size or perceived ideal "look"—it’s about celebrating your natural frame and dressing in a way that highlights you.

Why We Use The Kibbe Body Type System And What It Is:

While many body typing systems and methods exist, we prefer to use the Kibbe Body Type System. Developed by famous stylist David Kibbe, it goes beyond measurements, focusing on your overall body essence. The Kibbe system looks at:

  • Bone structure: shoulders, height, and overall skeletal frame
  • Body flesh: the distribution of and softness or tautness of the skin
  • Facial features and proportions: eyes, jawline, chin, nose, etc.

The Kibbe system is comprised of 5 body type "families" and 10 distinct types. The types flow on a spectrum from yang to yin. In this system, yang refers to sharpness, angularity, broadness, and tautness. And yin refers to roundedness, curves, softness, and fleshiness. Unlike other methods, Kibbe doesn’t try to force you into one mold—it helps you dress in alignment with your natural lines, enhancing your confidence and style.

Does The Kibbe Body Typing System Work For Men?

The simple answer is yes! Check out the chart below for celebrity examples of male types.

How Does Dressing For Your Body Type Work?

Dressing for your body type works by choosing clothing that highlights your natural proportions and creates visual balance. Instead of trying to change your body, the goal is to use shapes, cuts, fabrics, and details to emphasize balance and harmony. For example, certain necklines can highlight the shoulders, structured waists can define the midsection, and different pant cuts can lengthen the legs. By understanding how clothing lines, volume, and fit interact with your body’s natural shape, you can create outfits that feel more flattering, comfortable, and intentional. Ultimately, dressing for your body type is about working with your body’s unique structure to enhance your overall style and confidence.

An Example Of Dressing For Your Type Vs. Against Your Type

Let's use Jennifer Lopez as an example. She's a soft natural Kibbe body type. To quickly sum up her body type, she's got some width across her chest and back, but still has curve. To dress harmoniously as a soft natural, it's all about relaxed fabrics, highlighting the curve of the waist, and emphasizing a long vertical line. Below, you'll see two examples of where she is *not* dressing for her body type and two examples where she is dressing for her body type. We're pretty sure that everyone with eyes will be able to tell that there's a major difference!
